IRLE offers many opportunities for students to engage with and produce top-level research on labor and employment at UC Berkeley.

Graduate Student Research Awards
IRLE provides flexible funds (up to $6,000) to qualified masters and doctoral students to advance student research projects in partnership with a faculty advisor or mentor. The application period for 2022-2023 is now closed.

Eligibility

  • Masters and doctoral students with a GPA above 3.0 and no incompletes.
  • Applicants must be in residence at UC Berkeley and not on leave during the grant period. (Working remotely is fine).

2022-2023 Awardees »

Dissertation Fellowship Program
Fellows receive two semesters of resident tuition and fees plus a $15,000 stipend to support the completion of dissertations related to IRLE’s mission. The application period for 2022-2023 is now closed.

Eligibility

  • Doctoral students with a GPA above 3.0 and no incompletes.
  • Applicants must be in residence at UC Berkeley and not on leave during the grant period. (Working remotely is fine).
  • Because the purpose of the IRLE Fellowship is to enable full-time research and writing, preference is given to Fellows who do not hold teaching or other academic appointments during the fellowship year.

Social Sciences Research Pathways (SSRP)

Social Sciences Research Pathways (SSRP) is a yearlong paid research development program that connects undergraduate students with graduate student mentors pursuing masters or doctoral-level research.

Through the program, undergraduate mentees develop fundamental research skills and receive meaningful mentorship from graduate researchers to prepare them for future scholarly pursuits. In turn, graduate student mentors gain experience leading a research team and the conscientious support of undergraduate mentees for their research projects.

Eligibility

  • Mentors: Social sciences graduate student pursuing masters or doctoral-level research projects.
  • Mentees: Undergraduates from all backgrounds interested in exploring graduate school or careers in research, policy, law, social justice, and academia.

Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program
IRLE serves as a host for URAP projects related to our mission. We provide faculty and students with additional support: submitting projects, matching students with projects, student training, and an end of semester meeting.

Visiting Student Researchers hosted by a Berkeley faculty member can visit IRLE to work on independent research projects that contribute to the study of labor and employment issues.

Events and Meeting Space
IRLE hosts regular lectures and conferences, where guest speakers, faculty, graduate students, and visiting scholars present on a variety of topics. We also provide seminar space for faculty and students to hold events.
